Patients are often apprehensive about getting braces due to concerns they have over their potential appearance. This is generally centred around assumptions of braces being clunky, prominent pieces of equipment that would cause anyone to come out the other side looking worse off. Today, however, there are many other options in addition to the traditional metal braces. Many of these are far less prominent appearance-wise, and some will barely be discernible to the normal eye.
Before receiving braces, your dentist will walk you through which options are available and their respective drawbacks and strengths. Braces do not have to be unsightly, and with the range of choices out there aesthetics should no longer be a major concern.
What are Clear Braces?
The most common form of clear braces is the product Invisalign. Invisalign uses aligners rather than braces to straighten out crooked teeth. Where aligners differ from braces is that they’re clear, removable and are replaced at regular intervals as the teeth begin to realign. The aligners themselves are practically invisible, and as they can be removed there are no restrictions in what a patient can eat or drink. Invisalign does come with some differences, however, that one should be aware of before making a decision.
How does Invisalign compare to other braces?
In most cases, Invisalign will be more expensive than traditional options. This is due to the fact that they require a much higher level of specification and need to be replaced every two weeks. It can also take longer for the treatment to work. For an average patient, treatment with Invisalign will span 6-15 months with appointments every 6-8 weeks. However, for many, the simplicity and unapparent nature of Invisalign make it more than worth the wait.
If both you and your dentist believe Invisalign is a desirable option, a 3D scan of your teeth will be scheduled in order to send the results to Invisalign for your braces to be made. This process takes between 1 to 2 months from the creation of a specialised treatment plan to the actual shipment of the product. Once the product does arrive your dentist will provide you with the first 3-4 sets and schedule a follow up in the next 6-8 weeks to assess progress and provide the next set. Invisalign is a great alternative for those who are put off by the idea of braces. If you think Invisalign might be the right product for you, a consultation with a dentist can best provide you with the next steps towards a picture-perfect smile.
